Closing the Proaforum

Hey guys! we’ve decided to shut down the Proaforum. Sven and I are both tied up with other commitments. We’re sad to let it go, but at the same time we hope that proa enthusiasts will find other places online to discuss proas, or that a member of our community will take up the reigns and create a ne...

Re: 'Atlantic Six'

Thanks for the tip! :) Design for the 6m atlantic proa is going quite well. I'm still a bit stumped over how to get it right side up in the event of a full inversion though. Counter-acting a 60kg+ ama with a 2.5m lever (plus the weight * lever of the beams) requires quite a bit of leverage on my end...

Re: 'Atlantic Six'

Well there are a few things which brought me to the atlantic proa: 1. I already have a 5.8m ama lying around 2. Since the ama on an atlantic proa is being pushed down into the water instead of being lifted out, it contributes to the carrying of the overall displacement, which actually does allow me ...

Re: 'Atlantic Six'

Taken to the extreme from fully turtled: 1. Loosen ww stays and let the mast float up underneath the ama. 2. Loosen lw stays slightly. Stand on the mast and push the ama up and over the hull, it ends at say 30 degrees past vertical. 3. Re-tighten ww stays. Climb up on ama to right the boat. 4. Re-t...

Re: 'Atlantic Six'

My plan is to have a pair of running lee shrouds, one to each beam, and always keep the forward one tightened, and the aft one loose, led around the back of the mainsheet. Add to that a forestay, backstay, and weather shroud, and that should keep the rig standing. If ever I were to mess up with the ...

Re: 'Atlantic Six'

For the rerighting, I think that a good solution might be a small masthead float (on the order of 10-15 liters), windward racks where I can put my weight, and a righting pole something like this, but longer (and perhaps more like a ladder): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTRS5pTZGV4 The small masth...

Re: 'Atlantic Six'

And I would ditch the safety ama. More money weight and windage. Especially if you carry enough load in the leeward ama? Agreed.A couple of friends of mine suggested extending the windward rack enough to allow sitting there though. I could add some longitudinal tubes as well, like on the racks of t...

Re: 'Atlantic Six'

Hey guys, thanks for the input! :) I have to admit though that I'm not very keen on cutting yet another hole into the hull, but you are right that a leeward escape hatch would always be above water, even if the boat pitchpoles and then turtles... In general the aim is to have the boat watertight. I ...
