R2AK 2018

Post by Rob Zabukovec » 27 May 2018, 00:44

It’s almost that time again, for one of the most fascinating races on the planet....

Russell Brown is going again, 3 up. With a new pedal drive system:

And we have a Proa entered again as well:

Russell Brown just won the first leg of R2AK 2018. He had his wife Ashlyn, and another crew member on board for this leg only.

Absolutely romped it in...... Pity he is sailing solo for the big leg up to Alaska.....

Well done Russell and crew!!!

Meanwhile the Proa, Team Fly Baby Fly, also solo, is till somewhere in the middle of the Strait. It arrived late at Port Townsend, was put together in a blinding hurry and he is trying to learn how to sail it during the race...... Not a good omen.

It seems like the proa couldn't get it rig sorted and got pushed by the current over to Oak Bay. At least he can check into Customs there. Let's see if he tries to finish the first leg today.

Three other boats had plans to cross today from the south shore. Two are underway now.
